R. Robert Dale Scholarship

The R. Robert Dale Scholarship from the Moose International Organization for the class of 2012 is due June 30, 2011. Applications can be downloaded from www.mooseintl.org.
Current high school juniors are eligible to enter – one application per eligible junior- through the Moose membership of their mother, father, grandparent, or legal guardian. The student must have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (a C+). Applications must be received no later than June 30th, 2011. Winners may use their $1,000 scholarships for tuition, books, and fees at any accredited college or trade school after graduation from high school.

WorkKeys Testing for Seniors

The WorkKeys test will be administered to Seniors next week during these times:
3/29- 1st hour
3/30- 4th hour
3/31- 7th hour
This is an optional, but highly recommended assessment! I am going to attach a few links so parents and students can learn more about what this test is and what it is measuring. In summary, it is a career readiness assessment that measures employee skills. We will test in 3 areas including Reading for Information, Applied Mathematics and Locating Information. Employers may recognize, request, or require job seekers to have a Career Readiness Certificate to accompany an application. I highly recommend students who are interested in the Trades field and apprenticeships to take the WorkKeys assessment.

Also, please remember that the results of this assessment can be used as a qualifier for the Alaska Performance Scholarship. A 5 or better on each assessment will be a partial qualifier for students interested in pursuing a career or technical school.

Logon to PowerSchool using your students account:
Click on Class Registration

Then follow directions on Course Registration Screen and select the pencil to edit

If it will not let you register more than likely it has to do with the sequence of classes the student has taken. Be to check your graduation progress (provided in the packet sent home) or go here in your powerschool account

If it still doesn't allow you to register online, fill out form in packet and return to me by February 28, 2011

I'm getting lots of GOOD questions about scheduling. What that tells us is that parents are getting the communication from the school and are concerned!! So here is an update:

1. For those of you who missed parent scheduling night, no worries. During 4th hour on Monday we will get the rest and hand out their registration packets. It will have a step by step guide to access course registration. I will also post the presentations here.
2. Please use the students graduation progress in order to register for appropriate classes. If it doesn't let you, please just hand write the requests and turn in the form to me by Monday February 28, 2011

iPASS Math Intervention

Schedule changes have happened for second semester. (Actually in the process of happening) There is a new class that is being held in the computer lab during second hour. Students have been selected based upon their performance on the Alaska Standards Based Assessment. This online math intervention course will be counted as a general elective towards students graduation requirements. It includes both an audio and visual learning component and allows for additional practice and review in areas of math where there is additional need of individualized instruction. 1. The Husky Opps is updated as of 12/ 10
2. The ASVAB scores are in and J.P. from ASVAB came down and did a recap of the scores and how to use the results. It was really beneficial. Any parents who have questions can email or call.
3. The PSAT scores are in. I will get them out to students before the break.
4. We are in finals week... Good luck to students... They start tomorrow!

The Rural Alaska Honors Institute is open for applications. The application deadline is March 28, 2011. What a great opportunity for students to experience. You can go to www.uaf.edu/rahi for more information! But students have the opportunity to earn from 7-11 college credits. They will live on campus at UAF during the dates of May 31-July 14, 2011. We had a student attend last year and he said it was a great experience and came back to high school his senior feeling like he really needed to challenge himself in order to be ready for college next year. I HIGHLY ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO APPLY.

Recap on parent night

What a great surprise! I was so excited to see how many parents and students were in attendance :) Thanks to all that attended. I will post the powerpoint on the senior page at the top of the blog. I wanted to record my voice (which I did) however, when asked to save I was caught in a brainless moment and I clicked don't save. Bummer. I'll have to find a minute (hour) in my crazy day to rerecord. One thing that I forgot to mention was the Western Undergraduate Exchange program.. Look for more details soon.
So parents wondering if your student was listening??... I had 6 student register for ACT/SAT tests today, so thanks for your support. We will be keeping in touch throughout the rest of the year!! Thanks again.

I wanted to say thanks to a parent that stopped by and made some suggestions about my blog. She gave some good tips and we had a good discussion, therefore I made a few revisions. Well mainly one...

1. I changed my labels (I'll explain later) and put them back in list format and moved them to the left side of the blog. I hope this make things a little more clear.

2. To use the blog there are three ways to find posts:
   a. You can just view the homepage and read the posts that are organized by the most recent post.
   b. You can use the labels tag on the left and click on the subject and all the posts related to that will appear at one time.
   c. You can view the archive (towards the bottom of the blog on the right) and you can view the postings by month.

3. You will also notice pages I added for Freshmen, Sophomore, Junior and Seniors. These are being built as we speak and are going to include checklist for students and parents to stay on track and work towards graduation and post-secondary planning.

4. As always, if you would like to see more tips, please email me. I would love to help out more!

The WorkKeys assessment is required for all 11th graders beginning this school year (10-11). Our Juniors will be taking it in February (schedule TBD). This is a job skills assessment developed by the ACT company to measure the foundational skills needed to succeed in the workplace. There are multiple sections of this test, but our Juniors will be taking the Applied Mathematics, Reading for Information, and Locating Information sections. Upon a minimum level of completion, students will receive a National Career Readiness Certificate that will indicate and individual's skills in those three areas.
For students interested in attending a career and technical education program in the state of Alaska, they need to score at least a 5 on those three sections in order to be eligible for the Academic Performance Scholarship.
Students interested in pursuing apprenticeships in the trades, they use this test to determine entrance into those programs.. Here are some examples:

Alaska Operating Engineers Employment Training Trust- Applicants need to meet a level 4 or higher on each of the three assessments.
GCI- Asks applicants if they have a NCRC and encourages applicants to obtain one for some of its positions.
Associated Builders and Contractors- Will allow the Applied Mathematics level 4 as an option to meet math requirement.
Electrical Apprenticeship- Accepts Applied Mathematics level 6 as an option to meet Mathematics requirement. Also would like to see the NCRC.
Alaska Construction Academies- Will require applicants to take the WorkKeys as part of their application process

PSAT

I will administer the PSAT on October 13th in my room. Students need to register with me (sign outside my door). The cost is $13. There are only 25 spots available, so register early. I encourage all juniors planning on attending a college/university to take the PSAT as it can qualify you for the National Merit Scholarship. I give the ACT test 2 times a year. For the 10-11 school year, I will administer the test on October 23, 2010 and February 11, 2011. The registration deadline for the October test is September 17, 2010.

So the first day of school was off to a great start! Big assembly in the gym.. Mr. Hall dunked the basketball for the teacher team :)

Students will have 5 days to change their schedule. They need to pick up a drop/add form outside my office. Please go to the scheduled class, until I get your changed schedule to you. So Wednesday at 2:30 is the last day to change your schedule!

Scheduling Concerns

Students and parents: The policy for schedule changes reads that students have 5 days to change their schedule once classes begin. However there are a few things students will not be allowed to change. There will be no:
1. Teacher changes
2. Changing classes to be with friends
3. Or 'because I want an easier class'

At this point in the scheduling process, classes are getting full. If a student wants to ATTEMPT to change their schedule, he or she will need to pick up a form (located in front of my office) and have a parent signature along with the reason for the change. Even with this form.. NOT ALL SCHEDULE CHANGES WILL BE GRANTED.
